SUPERCROSS QUALIFYING Motoconcepts Yamaha rider Dan Reardon holeshot the first Supercross
heat race, but a few mistakes dropped him from the leaders pace on the
first lap. Honda Red Bull rider Davi Millsaps took control a few
corners into the race. Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey took
control of second early on, and methodically reeled Millsaps in, until
he was on the leader’s rear wheel at the start of the white-flag lap.
Millsaps held on, however, for the win ahead of Dungey and Monster
Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed, who sliced through the field after a
terrible start. Notable qualifiers included ampm/Boost Mobile/J-Law
teammates Grant Langston and Jason Lawrence, who finished sixth and
ninth, respectively. Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Austin Stroupe holeshot the second Supercross heat and the first-timer in the class led for a lap and a half before Supercross Champion James Stewart took control. Honda Red Bull rider Andrew Short followed Stewart past Stroupe and did his best to keep up, but with a clear track before him, Stewie went to work and checked out. Villopoto was the last rider to work past Stroupe, doing so on the fourth lap in the whoops. At the finish, it was Stewart with a five-second lead over Short, followed at a distance by Villopoto and Stroupe. A surprise non-qualifier was Stewart’s teammate Josh Hill, who went down on lap one and came home in 15th. Hill stormed out of the gate with a vengeance when the gate dropped for the Supercross LCQ and he made quick work of the field, enjoying four-second lead at the start of lap two.
SUPERCROSS MAIN EVENT When the field lined up for the parade lap, JGR/Muscle Milk/Yamaha’s Josh Grant was noticably absent. Apparently, last year’s round-one winner was still feeling the effects of his big crash earlier in the week and thought better of lining up for the main. Dungey led the way at the start of the 20-lap Supercross main event, earning the Spike holeshot award aboard his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450. Stewart was second ahead of Villopoto, Stroupe, Short and Reed, who pulled off with broken spokes in his wheel before starting lap two. Dungey looked like a seasoned veteran as he maintained control of the point position, with Stewart seemingly content to sit back and watch in second. The two slowly but surely crept away from third-placed Villopoto, who had his hands full with Short and Windham. At the halfway point, Dungey pulled out a three-second cushion over Stewart, who made a few small mistakes that had the crowd on its toes. Villopoto, meanwhile, began to succumb the the cold that haunted him in the days prior and could do little as both Short and Windham raced past. Windham brought the crowd to its feet on lat 15 when he blitzed past Short in the whoops, the wily veteran taking control of the final spot on the podium.
With five laps to go, Stewart caught fire and almost instantly reeled the leader in, driving the crown absolutely nuts. A calculated dive to the inside of the first turn at the start of lap 18 rewarded Stewart with the lead, and almost instantly, the Supercross Champion began to pull away from his former training partner. On the white flag lap, Dubgey let it all hang out and pulled right back up to Stewart’s rear wheel, nearly passing him in the first-baseline whoops. Dungey’s popular charge came to an end three corners from the finish, however, when he lost traction in a corner before a tricky step-down double and was forced to back off. Though he was the victor, Stewart was visibly unsatisfied with his performance. Dungey was second, comfortably ahead of Windham, while Short and Villopoto rounded out the top five.
